Price

I got my Elgato Green Screen MT for $160, but of course prices change. I have a link to the current pricing in the description. There are some cheaper alternatives out there, and generally they're a lot smaller or not very easy to put away. So let's see what this one can do to justify the price.

Specifications

I measured my panel at about 76 inches across and 78 inches vertically. This lines up with the official specs on Elgato's website, but I wanted to make sure they weren't pulling a fast one. This is a full foot taller than my height at 68 inches (5’8”) and it is also longer across than my wingspan.

The material feels like some kind of mix between like a piece of clothing like a tshirt, and thick poster paper. It is thick enough so that it will not rip, but it is also flexible enough to roll up without wrinkling. That is important so that light does not hit the panel unevenly which will mess up your attempts to chroma key. I did not actually weigh the Green Screen MT but I'll take Elgato's word on the 12 pounds. It felt a bit heavier than that as I was setting it up though...

The panel comes with two hook attachments at the top so that you can mount it onto hooks on your wall or ceiling. Let’s get into setting this thing up!

Convenience

There are two parts to convenience. Initial setup and subsequent setup. That is, how easy it is to take it down, put it away and set it back up again at a moment's notice. Is the Elgato Green Screen MT easy to setup for the first time? NO. If you remember anything from this review, let it be this section.

The only thing that comes in the box is the green screen panel itself and installation instructions. No tools, no hooks. To mount this thing properly, you'll need a drill, a drill bit (a wide one), and some hooks. I used swag sooks (official name) that I got from the local hardware store.

I watched a YouTube tutorial on installing swag hooks because I had never done anything like this before. Make sure you test and measure for yourself the exact distance across that you need the hooks to be so that you don’t have holes and hooks in the wrong place in your ceiling. I found drilling into the ceiling was overall better for how my desk is positioned, but if you have a wall right behind you instead of in front of you, then you can go with that.

Here comes the best part of this Green Screen: putting it away and setting it back up. To put it away, pull on the grip at the bottom and let it go up. To set it back up, same thing, pull slightly to release the tension, pull down, and then pull slightly again to lock it in place. Extremely easy. It's like one of those pull down projector screens from school. You don't have to carry it around or have it in the way. It's just rolled up and already stored.

Performance

You would expect something this expensive to have no issues at all with performance. But why just talk about the performance? Let's test out some games! To record this footage, I used the Logitech Brio with 2 Elgato Key Light Airs. My reviews of both are linked.

This green screen works perfectly. Ultimately it has exactly one job, so it better! It is important to have adequate and even lighting to maximize its performance.

Verdict

The Elgato Green Screen MT is an amazing chroma key panel. It has great build quality, it’s super convenient (after the initial setup), and it performs exactly as it should. I highly suggest it, and I've started using it in all my gaming streams and videos. It's worth buying for the convenience factor alone. No bulky room clutter, no hassle.

However, this panel is NOT for everyone. It is specifically for people who are cool with drilling holes in their wall or ceiling. So if you are in an apartment, or just not comfortable with that sort of thing, it might be better to get Elgato's other Green Screen that sits on the ground. See you in the next review.
